A letter to my daughter on her first birthday

Dear Stella: A Letter to My Daughter on Her First Birthday

Dear Stella,

Let me preface this by saying there are so many clichés that you roll your eyes at before you have kids, but when you become a parent they just become so relatable and real.

“The days are long but the years are short.”

Some days do seem to go on forever… particularly the ones where you won’t just close those beautiful blue eyes and get your much-needed beauty rest.

At the same time, I feel like I blink and you are growing into the next clothing size! It’s a strange phenomenon, Stella.

Another that particularly stands out is “Babies don’t keep.”

You littles just grow grow grow and go go go. I swear I just had you, and yet you are now a toddler constantly on the move. Time just flies. I am so glad I made a point to be present with you as much as possible. I loved all the baby snugly naps, and already you prefer to sleep in your own space.

Watching your personality develop has absolutely been my greatest joy, Stells.

You are sweet. You love to smile and laugh with mama and daddy. Your little wave is adorable, and when you say hi it melts everyone you are talking to.

You are stubborn. You are persistent and go for what you want. I’m going to say you get this trait from your father (haha!). Someday I think you’ll know what I mean.

You are silly. You love to head bang (dance) and have giggle wars with your daddy.

You love animals. Specifically your cat. If you are grumpy all I have to do is take you to see him and you are instantly all smiles.

You love the outdoors. This makes my mama heart so happy. You crack us up by staring out the window constantly with your cat when we are inside.

You don’t care much for toys, but you LOVE books and musical instruments. Those are the best toys you could have, anyways.

You are our future foodie. You will try anything! You seem to love meat and fish the most, followed by fruits & cheese. You impress everyone with the variety you eat. I am soaking it up because something tells me once you can talk and tell me what you want, this may change!

You are independent. Your favourite activity is to “read” by yourself, flipping the pages and babbling away. You absolutely refuse to walk holding our hands, you just want to try to do it all by yourself.

We love you more every single day and are so grateful you chose us to be your parents. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for our little Stella Bella Baby Boo.

Love you always,
Mama & Daddy
